Grow Community, Bainbridge Island
“Imagine telling your grandchildren, “when I was your age, they actually had to come and pick up garbage in a big truck.”
That’s one of the many reasons why we’re excited to take part an innovative project that is taking the concept of “Green Building” to a whole new level. That project? The GROW Community on Bainbridge Island.
From the outset, the Grow Community was envisioned as a sustainable neighborhood, incorporating all of the principals of new urbanism, focusing on energy efficiency and creating an interactive community. The project is ideally located on the edge of the commercial center of town to create a pedestrian-oriented, energy-efficient, multigenerational neighborhood. Our goal is not just to meet codes and standards for reducing our impact and usage of water and energy, but to set new standards for sustainable, affordable living, creating a community where social engagement and carbon reduction are equally important goals.
Reflective of our own principles rooted in sustainability, the amazing people behind this project are developing a community rooted in the idea of “One Planet Living”:
The One Planet Living Program envisions a world in which it is easy, attractive, and affordable for people everywhere to lead, happy, healthy lives within their fair share of the earth’s resources.
One Planet Living uses ten guiding principles as a framework for building healthy, vital communities.
The program was developed by BioRegional, an international, non-profit environmental organization. The Grow Community will be one of five endorsed One Planet Communities in the world, and the second in North America.
As our work continues, we’ll keep this page updated.
